Hingeback Tortoises are among the most unusual and fascinating tortoises in the reptile hobby. Members of the genus Kinixys are easily recognized by the unique hinge located near the rear of their shell, allowing them to partially close the back of the carapace for added protection. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, these distinctive tortoises are prized for their unusual anatomy, manageable size, and engaging personalities.

Unlike many desert tortoises, Hingeback Tortoises thrive in warm, humid environments with plenty of cover and opportunities to forage. They are active, curious tortoises that appreciate naturalistic enclosures and a varied omnivorous diet consisting of leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, and occasional protein. Their unique appearance and interesting behaviors make them rewarding long-term companions for dedicated keepers.

At Big Apple Herp, we offer healthy Hingeback Tortoises for sale that are carefully maintained and professionally shipped.
